Alumol™ – lubricants for drawing pure aluminium and aluminium alloy rod

Metalube Logo

Alumol™ is a range of high performance lubricants specifically developed for the drawing of aluminium and aluminium alloy wire. All of the products in the Alumol™ range contain an optimised combination of natural and synthetic lubricity additives. Their high affinity for aluminium provides exceptional film strength to deliver outstanding surface finish and die life. The use of high purity base oil and the latest antioxidant technology minimises thermal degradation and significantly extends service life. In addition all Alumol™ products have the ability to absorb small quantities of water – preventing problems such as wire breaks and surface scratching that are usually caused by ingress of moisture.

Practical experience has shown that Alumol™ drawing lubricants will deliver maximum benefits when used in conjunction with the VRX additive and Filtermet centrifugal filtration system. Together these products deliver significantly enhanced service life, reduce costs and improve production efficiency.

Features and benefits

  • Provides optimum boundary lubrication to protect dies and provide outstanding surface finish on drawn wire.
  • Excellent resistance to thermal degradation extending service life.
  • Low viscosity aids separation of aluminium fines and pumpability.
  • Able to absorb some moisture without compromising lubrication performance.
  • Functions well with both the FILTERMET centrifugal cleaning system and Alumol™ VRX to further extend life and maximise performance, delivering significant cost savings.

The Alumol™ Range

Alumol™ 145

Under recommended conditions, top drawing speeds can be achieved whilst attaining an excellent bright surface finish on the drawn wire. The lubricant is inhibited against premature ageing, so longer bath life can be expected. A unique additive is also employed for dispersing small quantities of water, and allowing drawing to continue unhindered. A top quality lubricant for drawing pure aluminium and electrical grade alloys on high speed slip machines.

Alumol™ 195

Has all the properties of Alumol™ 145, but is formulated to have a higher lubricating film strength to cope with the high temperatures which result when mechanical alloys are drawn. It is also preferred when electrical grade aluminium is drawn and lubricant temperatures are high. Surface finish is reportedly enhanced by the use of Alumol™ 195, and often machine speeds can be increased.

Alumol™ 80

A lower viscosity lubricant suitable for drawing pure aluminium rod in machines where pumping higher viscosity lubricants may be a problem.

Alumol™ 15, Alumol™ 20 and Alumol™ 32

Three low viscosity grades of lubricant used especially for drawing fine sizes of 5000 series alloys on high speed slip machines. This product has been formulated to give the optimum results in die life, surface finish and production speeds. These grades are suitable for drawing fine sizes of aluminium for magnet wire application. They are easily degreased prior to enamelling.

Low viscosity Alumol™ lubricants can be used in the final die boxes of multi-hole non-slip machines to give a clean bright finish to the drawn wire.

Other lubricants used for non-slip drawing are Alumol™ 350, Alumol™ 500, Alumol™ 1000 and Alumol™ DBL. Selection depends on the method of lubricant application.

Alumol™ VRX

An additive for aluminium wire drawing lubricants which has the joint function of reducing viscosity and boosting lubricity, resulting in extended drain intervals for the lubricant.

FCCU (FILTERMET Centrifugal Cleaning Unit)

Filtration of metal particles to extend the working life of the oil and improve the performance of the lubricant.

Metarol™ 463 and Metarol™ DB

Metarol™ is a water soluble rolling lubricant specifically designed for the hot rolling of aluminium and aluminium alloy rod.
